  • A boiler heats water to a moderate temperature.
  • A circulator pump moves that water from the boiler through a manifold, which acts as the distribution hub for the system.
  • The manifold feeds individual tubing loops running under the floors of each zone in your home.
  • The warm tubing transfers its heat into the floor mass above it, which carries the warmth into the room.
  • Thermostats in each zone tell the system when to send more warm water and when to rest.

Because the water runs at lower temperatures than radiator systems require, modern condensing boilers can operate in their most efficient range. Hydronic vs. Electric Radiant Heat: Which One Do You Need?

The tradeoff is operating cost. Electricity is a comparatively expensive way to generate heat, so electric radiant systems become costly to run as the heated area grows. Hydronic systems cost more to install because they require a boiler, pump, and manifold, but they are far less expensive to operate across large areas. The Department of Energy notes that hydronic systems use little electricity and can be heated by a wide variety of energy sources, including gas-fired and oil-fired boilers.

In new construction, tubing is most often embedded directly in the concrete slab. Concrete holds heat exceptionally well, so a slab system delivers steady warmth for hours, a genuine advantage during cold Sierra nights when outdoor temperatures swing hard after sunset.

In homes with wood-framed floors, tubing can be stapled up beneath the subfloor between the joists, usually with heat transfer plates and insulation below to push the warmth upward. A third approach places tubing in grooved panels or a thin overpour above the existing subfloor, which raises the floor height slightly.

Is Radiant Floor Heating Worth It in Northern Nevada?

One reason radiant systems appeal to homeowners planning to stay in their houses for decades: the tubing itself has no moving parts and, properly installed, is designed to last as long as the home.

The mechanical side of the system does benefit from professional attention. The boiler should receive routine service to keep it running in its efficient range, and the system pressure, circulator pump, and manifold should be checked periodically.
